The Ship

“When the ship has finally sailed, only a fool would go after it when it's already miles away. But sometimes, it’s a lot better to be a fool to go after what we want and need, rather than to regret everything in the end because we never even tried…” – Capt. Jack Sparrow

Is this foolishness? I tried. I surrendered. I brought down the white flag but here I am…still waiting even you're miles away. Patience I need you. Don't ever leave me.

Still Life

STILL LIFE
by: KATRINA FLORES
Finalist, Full Length Films Category
(synopsis from www.cinemalaya.org)

An intimate and character driven piece, STILL LIFE is the story of James Masino, a gifted Filipino painter who finds out he is afflicted with a paralyzing disease known as Guillain Barre Syndrome. Faced with a future where he can no longer paint, James leaves his life in the city and goes on a self-imposed exile to paint one last time, one final masterpiece. Unable to imagine a life without his art, he plans to kill himself once he finishes this painting. But Fate intervenes and derails this grand scheme when James learns that he must share this exile with Emma, a beautiful and mysterious young girl who at 19 has lived a life much too old for her years. But it is her courageous and unfailing optimism despite what life has dealt her that ultimately inspires James to realize a life beyond his canvass. Her search for meaning propels his journey towards hope and redemption. And what unfolds is an offbeat love story between a 30-year-old man and a 19-year-old girl that begs the question what is truly the purpose of one’s life? The answer they find in each other will turn out to be simpler and far more astonishing than either one might have ever guessed.

We (4 officemates and me) pushed through with the plan. We watched Still Life at CCP at around 9 pm. I was so glad that we all liked the movie. The humor and drama blended with the deliberation of the moral of the story. I was kinda worried that they might not appreciate the film but it was really worth watching. I liked the twist of the story and the cinematography plus the song "Comfort in Your Strangeness" by Cynthia Alexander. I also love the poster.
This Independent Film's something we Filipinos can really be proud of. There are other Indie Films that were showcased (like Endo, Kadin, Gulong, Pisay, Sinungaling na Buwan,Tribu, Ligaw Liham, Tukso and a lot more...) but we were not able to watch them due to lack of time and budget. lol.

Goddam day

Can't think of a nice title.

  • I spent 3 hours reading that goddam book, The Catcher in the Rye at the office. I'm already acquainted with Holden Caulfield ( protagonist / lead role ). Hopefully I could easily finish and make comments regarding the story. I'm still on chapter 8.

  • I had dinner with 3 of my close friends at Robinson's Galleria . Received tight hugs from them. I goddam miss them.

  • I'm really excited to watch Cinemalaya at CCP tomorrow with some of my colleagues. Hopefully, we could see "Still Life". Everybody's talking about it (everybody?). I'm goddam curious.

Find out why I'm using this goddam word. ;-)

8th year

Today.

Excerpt from my poem “Forever”

Your love seems eternal
From nowhere
It blossomed.
It existed.
And your love should
Not end.
For an amaranthine desire
In my heart was made.

Sweetest Downfall

http://media.putfile.com/Samson-51
I love this song.

Samson
by Regina Spektor

You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first, I loved you first
Beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth
I have to go,
I have to go
Your hair was long when we first met

Samson went back to bed
Not much hair left on his head
He ate a slice of wonder bread and went right back to bed
And history books forgot about us and the bible didn't mention us
And the bible didn't mention us, not even once

You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first, I loved you first
Beneath the stars came fallin' on our heads
But they're just old light, they're just old light
Your hair was long when we first met

Samson came to my bed
Told me that my hair was red
Told me I was beautiful and came into my bed
Oh I cut his hair myself one night
A pair of dull scissors in the yellow light
And he told me that I'd done alright
And kissed me 'til the mornin' light, the mornin' light
And he kissed me 'til the mornin' light

Samson went back to bed
Not much hair left on his head
Ate a slice of wonderbread and went right back to bed
Oh, we couldn't bring the columns down
Yeah we couldn't destroy a single one
And history books forgot about us
And the bible didn't mention us, not even once

You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first

White Flag

Do not allow the past to get you, don’t be attached to the past because the past is already gone. Do not allow the future, worries about the future, to get you, because the future is not yet here. There is only one moment for you to be truly alive, and that is the present moment. All the wonders of life can be touched in that moment. So the Buddha was clear on that. Everything belonging to life is there in the present moment; the blue sky, the beautiful face of your child is there, available in the present moment. If you get lost in the future, in worries about the future, or in sorrow about the past, life will not be available to you. So the basic condition is to go back to the present moment, to allow yourself to be touched by the wonders of life. -- Thich Nhat Hanh ( from tissuepaperworld's quotes )

Does putting the white flag down means that you are a sore loser?
This is the day that I deliberately surrendered to the most evasive war I had with myself. I suffered the most for I did not really know what I want. I wanted to be the person that I used to be but I built a wall and held a shield to protect myself from being deeply damaged and wounded. But I couldn’t find any meaning to what I’ve been fighting for that last 12 months of my life. I was lost. Deranged. Disoriented. And my hopes have gone asunder.
I need to make a move.
I need to do some changes in my life.
You have seen some of my previous posts. Full of angst and sensitivity. But a crack in the wall admitted some light. During the war, I groped in the dark. I could not find the way to my destination. The light who taught me the way back to my old self was my long time friend. She reminded me that I am by nature friendly and I have a deep concern for other people. I remember telling that I was damn tired of having friends to avoid attachments…and that was a terrible lie. Because deep inside, I have this great hunger for affection. I wanted to rekindle old friendships. I wanted to make new friends. I wanted to meet new people and build connection.

I wanted to destroy the wall.
I wanted to see the light.
I wanted to welcome the morning with a smile.
To be able to start, I should bring down the white flag.
I did.

Now, I have to say goodbye to my pride. For I have suffered so much because of that damn pride.
I have to say goodbye to being so idealistic. People have mere differences. I should learn to accept the things that I could no longer change. (i.e. the Rotten Tomatoes)

I should embrace optimism once again.

Hello old self. Stay with me at this present moment. We should work together. I no longer want to be in a somber state.

Stay with me and be touched by the wonders of life.

Overzealous

overzealous - marked by excessive enthusiasm for and intense devotion to a cause or idea;
fanatic, fanatical, rabid
passionate - having or expressing strong emotions

Who wouldn't love the movie "Transformers?" It has good graphics and story lines. Very touching.
I also love the coolness of Bumblebee (the guardian of Sam 'Spike' Witwicky). I want to have one. lol.

One Friday Afternoon

Cinquian 1

Green-eyed monster
Tricky, Susceptible
Plagued by anxiety
Inducing so much strain
Jealousy

Cinquian 2

Green-eyed
Unexpected
Monster attacking me
Insecurity leave me now
Jealous

**************************************************

Although they say that when jealousy flew out of the window indifference came in at the door...

*******************************************************

I am not really sure which of the two structure of cinquian is the correct one. Since I wanted to compose a cinquian poetry of how I am feeling now, I decided to make two.

Cinquian 1

The form for a Cinquain looks like this:

Line one: one word (title)
Line two: two words (describe the title)
Line three: three words (describe an action)
Line four: four words (describe a feeling)
Line five: one words (refer to the title)

Cinquian 2

A cinquain is a five lined poem. Diamond-shaped poems with 5 lines. It has the form of 2 syllables, 4 syllables, 6 syllables, 8 syllables, 2 syllables. I think that the last line has to have some sort of boom-boom effect.

Autographs

* People say strange things. Sometimes it’s better to be with the sheep, who don’t say anything. And better still to be alone with one’s books. They tell their incredible stories at the time when you want to hear them. But when you’re talking to people, they say some things that are so strange that you don’t know how to continue the conversation – The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo

I came across this excerpt while reading my previous blog. I remember one incident while I was alone in the comfort room intently brushing my teeth when suddenly some of my colleagues entered. They were discussing about autographs. They were reminiscing about those acronyms ( ITALY, JAPAN…and that acronym I couldn’t even remember now) because I swear, I or any of my childhood friends did not use that. ( I didn’t bother to tell them that I have kept so many in my cabinet waiting to be pestered by termites. lol.) They asked me why I don’t know about that acronym. I just smiled because I really don’t know the reason. All of a sudden, one of my colleague cracked a joke. “Maybe you do not have friends. Maybe nobody asked you to sign autographs.” She didn’t say it once. She said it twice. What for?
My smile faded. I didn’t say a word and I nonchalantly ignored what she said. I do not need to prove myself that time. It was not a point of argument either. I don’t know her intentions for saying that. She’s a frank person though I would just want to consider it as a joke. However, it wouldn’t be nice to judge her because of that. But what she said was really a strange statement and I don’t know how to continue the conversation.
But I really wanted to ask her what made her think that I do not have friends? Just because I am not part of any group in the office or I only have a few close friends, doesn’t mean I am not friendly at all. She really doesn’t know me. I used to be miss congeniality during high school and college days but unfortunately I’m tired of being one now. ;-) In the office, I used to hangout with a bunch of cool and wacky friends but since they wanted to try a greener pasture… I was left there. Counting more months before I finally set off to a different world. But it’s okay, no more emotional attachments. I cry everytime they leave. It’s tiring. Never did I consider the idea that sometimes I could stand being alone. But of course, it’s still better to have somebody to talk to. But I would rather be with someone whom I could tell anything and be simply me -- without pretension. It's not the quantity of friends that matter. It's the kind of friendship that you have. I am happy that I still have kuya. :-) I am happy that he is my constant companion. I am happy that I can blurt out my sentiments to him. I am happy because I have him to laugh at the silliest kind of conversation. And I am also happy that the quiet girl seated in front of me is also my friend.

What’s my point here? Sometimes, it’s fun to be alone than hear strange things. :-)

Hope or Acceptance?

I will repost 2 of my separation poems. I used them in my previous blog http://littlestar823.blogdrive.com "Two Worlds" depicts hope while "Restrospect" is mere acceptance.
This is for my friend. I know what you are going through. You conceal the pain through your euphoric facade but I know you. Your eyes tell me that you need someone who could ease your sorrow. I am here for you...

Two Worlds

Fate has set its way
Are we meant to submit
to the enigma of life?
Why one has to go
and leave bitterness.
My heart’s into rupture
I object…
But you no longer want to
be stopped.
I gazed at you
As you walk straight to
that path.

How you held me before…
So tightly.
Now you let go of my hand…
So swiftly.
Happiness, are you really
Transitory?

Then why did you look back
with a smile?
A surreptitious smile…
Is it hope?
Or is it just a guileful hope?
I kept reaching
But I lose sight of you
All I can see now
Is the dim horizon.
With no assurance…
This is my passion.

You have your own
World
I have my own
Time…be the judge!
When these two worlds
Will reunite.
Thy solitude be gone.
Thy turmoil face your end.
For I will celebrate if I
See the light…

Retrospect

The opening of the mementos’ box
After long been kept
Caused me to gaze intently…
…and recollect.

A retrospect.
One, two, three or more steps
Backward and backward
Rewind.

Memories were not yet gone
Memories of the smiles and laughter,
Memories of the difficult times.
(which are so few)
For most were jovial times

Even years have already passed…
I can still remember the face
Of the man I once loved
I once set my eyes
I once beg to stay
But lost.
Lost, amidst the efforts.

Questions…
So many of them.
Reasons…
Plenty of reasons
Why did it come to an end?

Time even so unclear…
Provided the reasons.

Maybe we’re not just meant,
But I have no regrets.
Maybe we’re not just meant…

The "Graying" of Emotion

I had a short chat with two of my officemates. The first one is a girl 2 years older than me. The other one is a guy 3 years younger than me. We shared our common experiences during college (we took up the same course). But the differences and comparisons occurred when we conversed about our life after school.
The guy was very vocal about his admiration to me & the other girl regarding work. He told us that we’re both talented and we already know enough while he still needs to learn a lot. He’s still having fun and doesn’t have clear plans for his life. I looked at the other girl and we both smiled. We're trudging the same phase. We’re both having dilemmas concerning work, plans & relationships.
Life and all its facets.
I started having this dilemma when I reached the age of 20 but it certainly got worse as years passed by. Time has changed me. I used to have juvenile dreams and unswerving plans despite the fact that I myself don’t know what will eventually happen in the future.
I tried to get what I want. I tried to be persistent & optimistic. But so much have changed.
Time made me feeble and fragile. More insecure. More confuse.
I still feel like a mediocre even if I tried my best in my field of work and there are no signs of progress.
I became afraid of emotional adherence and commitments. I used to have a lot of friends when I was young but the pain of seeing them leave one after the other made me fear attachments even more.

I am getting old and I am still here.
Stagnant. Unfulfilled.Unstable.
Lonesome.

I am relating this phase of my life to quarter-life crisis. For how long…that I do not really know. But this is tiring. I wish I’ll find the answers to my relentless questions. I wish I’ll discover what I really want in my life.

Infos about Quarter-life Crisis:

The quarter-life crisis is a term applied to the period of life immediately following the major changes of adolescence, usually ranging from the ages of 21 - 29. The term is named by analogy with mid-life crisis. It is now recognized by many therapists and professionals in the mental health field.

Emotional aspects
Characteristics of this crisis are:

These emotions and insecurities are not uncommon at this age, nor at any age in adult life. In the context of the quarter-life crisis, however, they occur shortly after a young person – usually an educated professional, in this context – enters the "real world". After entering adult life and coming to terms with its responsibilities, some individuals find themselves in a world of career stagnation and extreme insecurity. As the emotional ups-and-downs of adolesence and college life subside, many in the quarter-life crisis experience a "graying" of emotion. While emotional interactions may be intense in a high school or college environment – where everyone is roughly the same age and hormones are highly active – these interactions become subtler and more private in adult life. Nobody wants to admit to feeling like a 'loser' (especially not twentysomething men). This secrecy intensifies the problem. In his book, Barr reveals many of the anxieties twentysomethings have. Chief among these is the fear that everyone else is having an amazing time in their twenties. Furthermore, a contributing factor to this crisis may be the difficulty in adapting to a workplace environment. In college, professors' expectations are clearly given and students receive frequent feedback on their performance in their courses. By contrast, in a workplace environment, a person may be, for some time, completely unaware of a boss's displeasure with his performance, or of his colleagues' dislike for his personality. Office politics require interpersonal skills that are largely unnecessary for success in an educational setting. Emerging adults eventually learn these social skills, but this process – sometimes compared to learning another language – is often highly stressful.

Financial and social aspects

A primary cause of the stress associated with the "quarter-life crisis" is financial in nature. The era when a professional career meant a life of occupational security – thus allowing an individual to proceed to establish an "inner life" – is coming to a crashing end. Financial professionals are often expected to spend at least 80 hours per week in the office, and people in the legal, medical, educational, and managerial professions may average more than 60. In most cases, these long hours are de facto involuntary, reflecting economic and social insecurity. While these ills plague adults at all ages, their worst victims are ambitious, unestablished young adults.

Ithaca

When you set out on your journey to Ithaca,
pray that the road is long,
full of adventure, full of knowledge.
The Lestrygonians and the Cyclops,
the angry Poseidon - do not fear them:
You will never find such as these on your path,
if your thoughts remain lofty, if a fine
emotion touches your spirit and your body.
The Lestrygonians and the Cyclops,
the fierce Poseidon you will never encounter,
if you do not carry them within your soul,
if your soul does not set them up before you.

Pray that the road is long.
That the summer mornings are many, when,
with such pleasure, with such joy
you will enter ports seen for the first time;
stop at Phoenician markets,
and purchase fine merchandise,
mother-of-pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
and sensual perfumes of all kinds,
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
visit many Egyptian cities,
to learn and learn from scholars.

Always keep Ithaca in your mind.
To arrive there is your ultimate goal.
But do not hurry the voyage at all.
It is better to let it last for many years;
and to anchor at the island when you are old,
rich with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting that Ithaca will offer you riches.

Ithaca has given you the beautiful voyage.
Without her you would have never set out on the road.
She has nothing more to give you.

And if you find her poor, Ithaca has not deceived you.
Wise as you have become, with so much experience,
you must already have understood what Ithacas mean.

Reflection

It’s up to you.

I’ve been hearing that line…like forever. I will not think that you are being demanding everytime you tell me what you want. I want you to tell me what you want. For I would feel how badly you yearn and need me to be there for you. I want to feel the urge to do something good for you. What I do is a reflection of what I feel for you.

I care. And I want you to know that.

Just like what I’m doing now. I want you to do this for me.

Happy That It's Not True

I Like For You To Be Still
Pablo Neruda

I like for you to be still
It is as though you are absent
And you hear me from far away
And my voice does not touch you
It seems as though your eyes had flown away
And it seems that a kiss had sealed your mouth
As all things are filled with my soul
You emerge from the things
Filled with my soul
You are like my soul
A butterfly of dream
And you are like the word: Melancholy

I like for you to be still
And you seem far away
It sounds as though you are lamenting
A butterfly cooing like a dove
And you hear me from far away
And my voice does not reach you
Let me come to be still in your silence
And let me talk to you with your silence
That is bright as a lamp
Simple, as a ring
You are like the night
With its stillness and constellations
Your silence is that of a star
As remote and candid

I like for you to be still
It is as though you are absent
Distant and full of sorrow
So you would've died
One word then, One smile is enough
And I'm happy;
Happy that it's not true

Dahil Nariyan Ka

I am just so inlove with this song...

Dahil Nariyan Ka by Noel Cabangon
Parang langit
Parang walang hanggang panaginip
Parang langit
Parang walang hanggang panaginip
Dahil nariyan ka...

Anger Management

“Please let me talk to you so I can calm down…I’m so pissed off!” -li’l star
“It’s ok to feel that way. Maybe you think I’m numb ‘cause I don’t say anything…” –friend
“No, I don’t think that way. Sometimes I wish I am like you. You’re just cool or maybe the problem is just with me…” –li’l star
“You don’t have a problem. Just simply ignore them. You should still be glad that there are still good people in this room…” –friend
“Thank you…I’m glad I can still talk to someone like you.” –li’l star

It’s a simplified dialogue between me and the person seated in front of me. I could really say that I have considered her positive words and approach after my exaggerated statement of annoyance. I have calmed down. It’s good to know that I could still talk to optimistic people who can give soothing advices. She’s a breath of fresh air. I am suffocated by the negativity that the rotten tomatoes radiate. I badly needed someone like her around me. She is the embodiment of silence in moderation. She’s quiet. She really doesn’t talk that much. And when she talks, she speaks softly. She speaks with wit and depth. She doesn’t utter negative remarks against others. And I couldn’t thank her enough for being there. I couldn’t thank her enough for I appreciate her silence nowadays.

It's a Beautiful Day

I am vehemently upset today (ironic to the title). Instead of posting a complain, I would rather give an uplifting excerpt from the Book Zahir (A Novel of Obsession. p.292)
Although I know that I may have lost forever the woman I love, I must try to enjoy all the graces that God has given me today. Grace cannot be hoarded. There are no banks where it can be deposited to be used when I feel more at peace with myself. If I do not make full use of these blessings, I will lose them forever.
God knows that we are all artists of life. One day, he gives us a hammer with which to make a sculpture, another day he gives us brushes and paints with which to make a picture, or paper and a pencil to write with. But you cannot make a painting, with a hammer, or a sculpture with a paintbrush. Therefore, however difficult it may be, I must accept today’s blessings, even if they seem like curses because I am suffering and it’s a beautiful day, the sun is shining, and the children are singing in the street. This is the only way I will manage to leave pain behind and rebuild my life.

Religion and Marriage

They go hand in hand. No matter what you do.

So you start dreaming of marching to the altar with a long veil and white gown then suddenly you wake up one day realizing that your mate doesn’t have the same visions as yours. You’re a Catholic. He’s a Protestant.

I haven’t thought much about religion until this circumstance happened to my friends. A happy couple of 5 years suddenly broke up because nobody wants conversion. They’re not getting any younger. Sooner or later they have to decide. They need to get married.

My friend asked me if I would also make the relationship last that long knowing that we came from different religious background. I said no. Maybe it's on my top list. They never had the chance to talk about it. One factor that couples must really consider. And it’s so sad that they need to part ways.

In some cases, there wouldn’t be any problems if both parties compromise. Perhaps, very inricate negotiations await the couple.

So you get to survive the marriage, then what happens to your children? What values should they consider? What kind of school are they going to attend? What beliefs should they follow?

A lot of issues will arise about religion and marriage but the answers will still up to the couples. How far would you go in terms of love?

Rusting Steel

This is not my composition but I would like to share it with you. This is how I feel at the very moment...

I am strong as they see from a cracked angle
fire-walled from all the burn outs
of pain and despair
sheltered from the downs of loneliness and sorrow-
tired eyes so it seems they have
chained, an authority of pretense
trying to conceal with sugar coated lies
all the feelings that would
burst out any minute (if the sourness is right)
a whirlpool of washed emotions
wanting to be drained
a violent sea in endless shover
longing to be calmed.

They would hear of my melodious chant of their
cornetted names
be greeted by a sun-ripened smile
but every fiber of my consumed flesh have wilted
all muscles have enduringly
feebled from the hazy charades
my whole being had been heedless to sufferings
for it had grown a corpse to
all these times of unsweetened pain

A cracked, distorted angle
that’s what they see me from
for I never succumbed to cascading tears
and my reliable insensitivity had turned
my tears into crystals of pain
like piercing poisoned arrows
through my smithereened heart

I am soft as clouds can be
...... I do bleed the rain of tears
...................which now leaves me
.......................rusting on a blue day.

To Be or Not to Be

If I didn’t take Fine Arts, I would want to be a writer or a psychologist.

I am a creative enthusiast that’s why I pursued a career in arts. But I also want to be a writer. I used to write poems and essays during my younger years. However, I just don’t have much time to do it now. What else do I still want to write about? I want to write about the current happenings in our society. To write commentaries and opinions on all sorts of issues. To give inspirational reflections. Anything under the sun! I just want to write about anything because in that way, I will be able to deliver and mull over things that make sense. And most especially release all my anxieties and personal luggage. For the time I wasn’t able to write, I just feel so empty…so lifeless. I couldn’t even organize my thoughts. I couldn’t even start a sentence. I couldn’t even compose a sensible paragraph. My mind’s slowly processing. It’s only now that I took a serious leap and squeeze whatever’s left on my head. I wish I am still talking with sense. :-)

I also want to be a psychologist. For someone who barely understands herself. This really makes sense. I am really nosy about human behavior. I believe, I also have a gift of extreme sensitivity towards others and I don’t know where I got that. I don’t even know if I should be thankful or not. :-) When I was young, I used to justify every action of the people I have encountered. Whether good or bad. I always have excuses for different temperaments and attitudes. I used to be calm and that makes me able to handle any situation. But as I grow older, things are getting out of hand. That makes me want to probe more about people’s personalities as they age. The various factors that cause so much conflicts. The changing behavior. The very unstable behavior.
I am working with writers and I’m thankful for that because I can learn more about writing. I wish I could also work with psychologists so I could get new learning from them. Better yet I should study it all by myself. :-)
