When Nature Lashes Back.

I was on the verge of hating 2009 since I have experienced so many downfalls and depressing situations during the past months. I’ve experienced numerous breakdowns. But those were just personal dilemmas. Issues I shouldn’t really be worrying about. Issues I shouldn’t be paying much attention because nothing was really lost. The consequences shouldn’t be considered negatively. Those were lessons intended for my own betterment and growth. This year, I would still want to think how blessed I am despite of all my setbacks. May God still continue to bless this life amidst the complaints I have deliberately uttered. He has bestowed upon me magnificent graces I should take into account. My depressing experiences were nothing compared to a number of people who were badly affected by typhoon Ondoy. There were people who lost belongings and even worst when they’ve lost their loved ones with just one blink of an eye. Nobody, even myself imagined being on that kind of condition.
Traumatic experiences are indeed unforgettable. People who experienced the wrath of Ondoy have their own share of stories. My first overnight stay at the office was a mixture of thrill and anxiety. First floor of our office was covered with flood. The lower area was appallingly damaged. We were just on the second floor with no electricity, water inside our comfort rooms and meager supply of food. We were like refugees and seeing a ladder heading towards the rooftop just in case the water reached our floor was dire alarming. But still, we were safe inside. We still managed to comfortably lie on the chairs transformed as beds so we could rest. Not even soaked with rain. It was a different scenario outside our building & I have witnessed dreadful episodes. The weapons I have for that night was a little humor so I could still laugh with my colleagues who were also stranded inside & FAITH. I have used my faith, prayed the rosary not only for our safety but also for the alleviation of the struggles of the people outside. We have no idea what was really happening. But to witness such great flood in Quezon City meant there were greater possibility that the typhoon could be intensely perturbing other areas. I have prayed for the heavy pouring of rain to stop so the flood would subside and the nightmare would soon be over. I was just thankful that when I called home, the situation just seemed so normal and I’d like to think that it was also a blessing. It meant that my family’s safe. Thank God.
It was a long night for all of us, the Filipino people. The aftermath of the typhoon was even worst. As we trudge our way towards our own homes the next day, we have carried with us the tedious experience but we were still blessed. On the contrary, watching the television was also heartbreaking. I couldn’t help but cry for the people who were severely affected. I just thought that if I was there, I wouldn’t be able to save a life because I don’t have the skills to swim. I couldn’t even transform myself into superwoman so I can fly, save and deliver goods to those who were in need. It was even hard to imagine that people who were also close to me became victims of the traumatic experience. I have been praying a lot lately and they’ve always been a part of my prayers.
To someone laidback like me, it was quite unusual to do something like sorting my clothes, slippers and donating them without any second thought. It wasn’t my conscience acting upon me. The whole scenario was right before my eyes and it just keeps on breaking my heart. I have also done this with initiative because I was lucky and it is my duty to do something for other people. A little help would matter. I couldn’t just stand the idea of lying comfortably at home and doing nothing while other people were still struggling for their survival. I would just want to share my blessings and extend even a little help. A little hope.
